ROYAL PALACE

Located in the heart of Bangkok, the Grand Palace was an ancient residence for King Rama I and King Rama V of the kingdom of Rattanakosin. Today, the place is used to host royal ceremonies and welcome guests of the king, guests of the state and other foreign dignitaries. It is also a place where the remains of kings and high-ranking members of the royal family were located prior to cremation.

The Royal Palace is divided into two main areas, which are the Temple of the Emerald Buddha and the royal residence. The latter is divided into three main areas: the External Court, the Central Court and the Internal Court.

The Outer Court runs from Wiset Chai Si Gate to Phiman Chai Si Gate and includes the interior walls of the Royal Palace. It is now the home of several state offices such as the Bureau of the Royal Household, the office of her Majesty's chief private secretary and the office of the Royal Institute.

The Central Court starts from Phiman Chai Si Gate to Sanam Ratchakit Gate. The area is where important royal ceremonies such as the royal coronation and the royal coronation day ceremony take place. In the Middle Court area are the Phra Maha Monthien Buildings, the Chakri Maha Prasat Buildings, the Phra Maha Prasat Buildings and the Siwalai Gardens District.

The Inner Court begins at the Sanam Ratchakit Gate at Thaew Teng, the row houses that were formerly the palace walls during the reign of King Rama I. The southern area of the Inner Court was then a female-only area; no man except the king was allowed to enter the area, where the queens, wives, mothers consorts and daughters of the king lived together with many ladies and servants. The area has no longer served as a residence nowadays.

WAT PHO

Wat Pho is not only one of the most visited Buddhist temples in Bangkok, it is also the combination of history, medical science and educational institution. Officially baptized Wat Prachetuphon Vimon Mangkararam, Wat Pho was founded during the 16th century and later became the Royal Temple of King Rama I of the Chakri dynasty. Located within the main ordination hall is the 46-meter reclining sacred Buddha, whose feet are beautifully inlaid with mother-of-pearl, carved with sacred signs. Wat Pho is, among Thais, also known as "the nation's first public university", thanks to 1,360 marble inscriptions on medical, historical and liberal sciences found throughout the temple where people can read and learn at any time . Marble inscriptions on medical sciences, anatomy and orthopedics are the origins of the traditional massage principles of Wat Pho Thai, which made Wat Pho a world famous site. Traditional service, nowadays, is also available at the nearby pavilion. in 2008, Wat Pho was named UNESCO World Memory (MOW) as a documentary heritage for Asia and the Pacific region.

WAT TRAI MITR

This Buddhist temple near Bangkok's Chinatown is famous for only one thing: the Golden Buddha. The story goes that in 1931 there was a restoration which took place at Wat Phraya Krai in the Yannawa district. The main Buddha statue, which was made of concrete, was then moved to Wat Trai Mit, which was also undergoing a major renovation and expansion. Twenty years later, in 1955, when the structures were completed, the Buddha statue was moved to be embedded in one of the buildings. But the Buddha statue was too heavy and fell from the lifting crane and its cracked surface revealed the pure gold hidden inside. After flaking off the surface of the concrete, the three-meter high pure gold Buddha statue was unveiled. It had been made up of three tons of 18-karat gold during the ancient Sukhothai kingdom, about 700-800 years ago. It is believed that the original golden Buddha was covered with cement plaster to hide it from enemies during the Sukhothai-Ayutthaya disputes. It is now the largest pure gold Buddha image in the world, enshrined in the newly built new level stupa.

TEMPLE OF MARBLE

Wat Benchamabopit Dusitwanaram (Wat Ben), or Marble Temple, built with Carrara marble, is located near the Government Palace and the Equestrian Statue of King Rama IV. It is an ancient temple during the Ayutthaya period, it was originally called Wat Laem or Wat Saithong. During the reign

of King Rama IV, the temple was restored by five princes and renamed Wat Bejamabopit (five princes). In 1899, King Rama V completely rebuilt the temple and gave it the name Wat Benjamabopit Dusitwanaram, which means the Temple of the Fifth King. He put Prince Narissaranuwatti in charge of the design and construction.

WAT SAKET (GOLDEN MOUNT)

Wat Saket or the Temple of the Golden Mount in Bangkok is an ancient temple dating back to the Ayutthaya period. Previously called Wat Sakae, the name was changed to Wat Saket during the reign of King Rama I. The Golden Mount, built under the rule of King Rama V, is 77 meters high and at the top reside many of the Buddhist relics found in the ancient city Kapilavastu.

Some other interesting things in this Bangkok temple are the numerous Buddha images, the temple hall, the pagoda, the scripture room and the Sri Maha Bodhi tree. This is another must-see place when visiting Bangkok.

FLOWER MARKET

The Bangkok Flower Market (Pak Klong Talad) is the largest wholesale and retail fresh flower market in Bangkok. The market has all kinds of popular flowers and flora-related items, including roses, orchids, lilies, and more. Most of them are sold in packs of 50 or 100 flowers each, and the prices are incredibly cheap. Part of the Old City, Bangkok's Flower Market is located on Chak Phet Road near Saphan Phut or the Memorial Bridge. Shops and vendors are housed in two- or three-story shops on either side of the main road. The market is located just south of Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha) and has access to a riverside pier, so it makes for a great day trip combined with other historic Old Town attractions.
