08:30 About BANG PA IN
A short 60-kilometer (40-mile) drive north of Bangkok along the banks of the Chaopraya River will take you to Bang Pa In, the summer palace of the kings of Thailand. The palace dates back to the seventeenth century, pre-dating the settlement of Bangkok as the capital, although it fell out of use for a long time. All the buildings you will see date back to his awakening by King Mongkut (Rama IV) in the 19th century. Today, the palace is used only infrequently, and therefore mostly for state occasions rather than as a royal summer residence.
The palace is very European in design. The buildings are arranged along an artificial ornamental pond. In what was formerly the public area of the palace, the lake is a long rectangular pool, lines with formal plantings and weird folly. The most obvious of the ornaments is a modern copy of a Khmer style.
10:00 About AYUTTHAYA HISTORICAL PARK
Founded in the year 1350 ca, Ayutthaya became the second Siamese capital after Sukhothai.
It flourished from the 14th to the 18th centuries, during which time it became one of the largest and most cosmopolitan urban areas in the world and a center of diplomacy and global trade. Ayutthaya was strategically located on an island surrounded by three rivers that connected the city to the sea. This site was chosen because it was located above the tide of the Gulf of Siam as it existed at the time, thus preventing the attack on the city by sea-going warships of other nations. The location also helped protect the city from seasonal flooding.
The city was attacked and razed to the ground by the Burmese army in 1767 which set the city on fire and forced the inhabitants to leave the city. The city was never rebuilt in the same location and today is known as a vast archaeological site.
Nestled on the island framed by three significant rivers: Chao Phraya, Lopburi and Pasak, the historic temples, palaces and remaining architecture of the ancient kingdom of Ayutthaya are one of Thailand's most treasured historical sites. The 715-acre area has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1991 as it portrays the days of one of the greatest kingdoms in IndoChina history.
Highlights include Wat Phra Si Sanphet, Wat Mongkhon Bophit, Wat Phra Mahathat temples, all of which are easily explored on foot.
