Day 1
DAY 1: CHIANG RAI – Arrival, Golden Triangle, Opium Museum – Boat Ride on the Kok River, Ethnic Minorities. (C.)
Arrival at Chiang Rai airport before 10:00 AM, welcomed by a local guide. Today, we begin exploring this province, the northernmost in Thailand, starting with the famous Golden Triangle, the point where the borders of Myanmar (formerly Burma), Thailand, and Laos meet. Located 9 kilometers north of Chiang Saen along the Mekong River, Sop Ruak is the place where the Mekong River (border with Laos) meets the Ruak River (border with Myanmar). In the past, the Golden Triangle was a major global hub for drug trafficking due to its strategic location relative to opium-producing countries. Today, it is a renowned tourist attraction.
The visit includes Wat Phra That Pu Khao, which offers a magnificent view of the Golden Triangle, the Mekong River, and the forested mountains. We continue to the Opium Museum, which educates visitors on the production of opium and its use in the lives of the hill tribal populations. Lunch is served at a local restaurant.
In the afternoon, return to the city and transfer to the pier to board a motorboat that will take us along the Kok River to Ruam Mitr, with a visit to the Karen and Lahu ethnic minorities. The Karen village of Ruammit, located on the banks of the Nam Mae Kok (Mae Kok River), is famous for its elephants and its long-standing tradition of training and clearing. It remains distinctly Karen, preserving its culture and traditions. Ruammit is accessible by a one-hour boat ride from Chiang Rai's provincial capital, with boats departing regularly from Chiang Rai's pier.
Late in the afternoon, arrival at the selected hotel and accommodation in reserved rooms. Overnight at the hotel in Chiang Rai.
Day 2
DAY 2: CHIANG RAI – CHIANG MAI, Blue Temple, White Temple, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. (B. L.)
At 7:00 AM, meet with the guide to visit the famous Blue Temple, or Wat Rong Suea Ten, located just a few kilometers from Chiang Rai. This recent temple is still under construction, although its main hall is now complete. Its magnificent blue interior, featuring a large white Buddha, is its standout feature.
Next, we begin the journey to Chiang Mai, with a stop to visit the White Temple, or Wat Rong Khun, along the way. This is one of Chiang Rai's most renowned religious sites. With exceptional artistry and highly elaborate architecture, the assembly hall of Wat Rong Khun stands out for its carved pediments and tooth-shaped crests. The hall itself is constructed primarily in pure white, symbolizing the purity of the Buddha.
Lunch will be served at a local restaurant during the trip.
Upon arrival in Chiang Mai, we complete the day dedicated to temples with a visit to the most famous temple in the area: Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. Located on a mountain, this temple offers panoramic views of Chiang Mai's mountainous region. Built in the early 19th century of the Buddhist era (we are now in the 26th), Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is marked by seven-headed serpent statues flanking the stairs leading to the temple. At the top, you'll find a golden pagoda in the Chiang Saen style and exquisite Lanna architecture. The view of Chiang Mai from here is simply breathtaking.
In the evening, transfer to the hotel and accommodation in the reserved rooms. Overnight at the hotel in Chiang Mai.
